Jacob Shook of New York


Jacob Schock/Shook/Schug (c.1710-?). Born in Holland about 1710. Married Anna Geertje Smid/Schmidt. Earliest record places him in Red Hook, Dutchess Co. NY in 1741. He refused to sign the pre-Revolution (c.1774) "Articles of Association." Others refusing from the Rhinebeck, NY precinct are Peter, Henrick, and Christian Shook (brothers? a parent?). Such refusal may indicate Tory sympathy, or more likely, religious rejection of bearing arms or government entanglement. Jacob could have been a Mennonite, for example. "One confusing thing about the research of this family....a cousin came from Holland a few years after our group and settled in North Carolina. His children's names follow the same patterns as our names and great care had to be taken..." This cousin was likely George Shook, son of Johannes Schuck of Northampton Co., PA. [Unidentified book by "CLL," pp. 25-30.] Some of his descendents continued to live near Red Hook, at a place later called "Shookville," and they built the Shookville Union Church.   1. Georg Adam Shook (1741-1806). Born 26 March 1741 near Red Hook, Dutchess Co. NY. Married Christine Pultz. They had eight children, all baptized at Rhinebeck Lutheran Church. He died in Red Hook 27 March 1806. [Shuck p.17]
    1. Anna Shook (1768-?). Bapt. 4 Dec 1768 at Dutch Reformed Church, Red Hook. Married Jacob Mohr. Three children: Maria, Lucinda, Christina.
    2. Peter Shook (17 Nov 1772-9 May 1862). Bapt. 6 Dec 1772 at Dutch Reformed Church, Red Hook. Married Marie Marie Bonesteel (1777-1844). Died in Red Hook, NY, and buried in Shookville Union Church, which was built by Peter and his brothers c.1810.

    5. Jacob Shook (28 Nov 1779-11 April 1862). Bapt. 26 Aug 1780 at St. Paul's Church near Red Hook. Married Catherine Stickle (30 May 1785-5 Oct 1846) on 10 June 1801 in Red Hook NY. Migrated with some of his children c.1840 to Mt. Clemens, MI, where he died.
      1. Edward Shook (31 Mar 1803-4 May 1834). Married Catherine A. Lyle on 15 Dec 1828. Buried in Montreal, Canada.
      2. Betsy Shook (10 Nov 1804-1863). Married Henry Teats.
      3. Katherine Shook (18 Dec 1805-22 March 1828). Married John I. Traver (1 Dec 1799- 1 June 1872) on 5 June 1823. Two children: Ida and Kate. He died in Mt. Clemens, MI.
      4. Robert Shook (4 Jan 1809-15 Mar 1865). Married Catherine Sophia Detrich (7 Dec 1813-4 Mar 1879) on 15 May 1837. Migrated to MI in 1854. 7 children.

      7. Caroline Shook (25 Mar 1815-21 Dec 1861). Married David Shook (25 Mar 1810-3 Aug 1865) c.1835. David was born in Milan, NY. They had 4 children. She died in Mt. Clemens, MI. He lived in Clinton Twp, Macomb Co., MI as late as 1875. He died in Central City, Colorado Territory.
